I was driving into work today when a thought popped into my head. Yes, I haven’t written in a while, but to be honest, I haven’t felt that I’ve had anything meaningful to say.
Until now. (lame ff xiv: arr commercial contest reference)
There has been a lot of talk in recent years about “gamer girls”, “fake geek girls”, and sexism in gaming. As the gaming industry, (and please let’s remember it is an industry) has become more “main stream”, debates among gaming culture have risen more to the surface from gamer and non gamer alike. I have found all of these to be in a negative light. Whether the topic is sexism, how much of a gamer you are, or even just the definition of gamer, instead of holding a positive discussion that embraces all aspects of the gaming culture, there is fighting and bickering about who qualifies as a gamer, or how sexist a game is. I recently (by recently, I mean months ago) stumbled upon a widely controversial 3 part series from Anna Sarkeesian, Damsels in Distress: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games.
Although I do applaud her for trying to open a discussion about the gaming industry, I do not agree with her approach or her opinions. Again, I see this as a negative discussion on gaming, using out dated information. My biggest problem with her stance, is that she left out some amazingly strong female characters, along with even whole series that contain strong female characters.
So, I will be starting my own blog series, without the need for whatever ridiculous amount of money from a kickstarter campaign, by talking about my female role models, not only as a female gamer, but a female in general. I will be speaking about my own experiences with these characters, and encourage you to comment with yours. If there are specific female characters that you would like to see talked about, please share them with me! Let’s start a positive discussion about female characters in the gaming community!
